Looking for something to do while you wait for the Aurora to come out and play? Come out to our cabin and join us on a wander through the boreal forest as we keep our eyes to the sky in hopes of catching the elusive Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights. Getting outside in Alaska after dark is a unique experience and one that locals love! Snow reflects any bit of light, coming from the moon or a headlamp, illuminating the trail ahead of you. With the help of the moon to illuminate the foreground, you will capture the perfect picture of the Aurora. Our Aurora Tour is during prime viewing hours from 10pm-12am.
Join us for a hike through the boreal forest. We will start and end in our cozy little one room cabin, where you will get to see what dry cabin living is all about. Here we will get headlamps, and check on cold weather gear, supplementing as needed. Once everyone is comfortable with their setup and clothing layers, we will head out onto the trails to discover the treasures of the forest.
On our Aurora Tour you will experience the magic of the boreal forest, moving through snow covered birch and spruce trees, including seeing iconic Alaskan dwarf spruce forest. We will walk through a winter wonderland admiring the way the snow sparkles with the light of a headlamp and keeping our eyes out for animals that prefer the dark such as moose, lynx, weasels, owls, and snowshoe hare. We will discover animal tracks, learn about local plant uses, and how plants and animals survive life in the cold. It may be winter but there are still birds, mammals, and plants to be found! |
Keep an eye to the skies as you never know when the Aurora (Northern Lights) might make an appearance!
This is your experience and we are happy to customize it to suit your needs. Trails are chosen depending on the abilities and interests of the group. If you want an exploratory nature hike, a quiet meditative walk in the woods, or a fast paced hike just let us know! If you get cold, we can always head back to the cabin to warm up and then poke our heads outside to see if the Aurora has come out yet.
After our wander in the woods you are welcome to come in and enjoy the warmth of the wood stove and sip on a cup of herbal tea (locally foraged by us) or hot chocolate. Feel free to ask questions and check out the projects we are working on and finished products made with locally foraged products. We are happy to share our experiences living in Alaska, hunting, working, and adventuring in Alaskan villages and bush. If you are missing your four-legged friend at home, our dog Cooper is happy to give you some attention and loves a good ear rub (He's also happy to lounge on his bed if you would rather not interact with him).
Come see what simple Alaskan living is all about and why Alaskans never get tired of watching the dancing lights!

There are 3 main things you want to consider when looking for the Aurora. First is your location; your odds of seeing the aurora increase drastically if you are beyond city lights which make it very hard to see all but the most active Auroras. Our location approximately 15 minutes from town is a great spot, a close drive, but far enough away from city lights that there is not light pollution. Second, check out what the KP index is- the higher the number the more likely it will be active. Visit the UAF Geophysical Institute for more information about the Aurora and to see what the KP index is during your visit. Third, keep an eye on the weather. If it is cloudy your chance of seeing the Aurora, even if it is active decreases. Check out Explore Fairbanks Aurora Tracker which combines data from the Geophysical Institute, local weather predictions, and the number of hours of daylight.
